The Arole Oduduwa and Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold and visionary step in birthing the South West Development Commission (SWDC), a long-awaited instrument of transformation for the region.

In a statement signed by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare, the revered monarch described the initiative as “a renewed beacon of hope” for the people of the South West, stressing that the creation of the Commission speaks volumes of President Tinubu’s deep-rooted commitment to equitable governance and regional advancement.

Ooni Ogunwusi did not hide his excitement over the appointment of two illustrious individuals from Osun State – Dr Charles Akindiji Akinola and Mrs Nike Omoworare – into executive positions within the newly inaugurated Commission.

According to the foremost traditional ruler, both appointees are credible personalities whose track records of service, competence and dedication are well-known and beyond reproach.

Dr Akinola, who is to serve as the pioneer Managing Director of the SWDC, is a development expert of repute and former Chief of Staff to the Governor of Osun State.

The Ooni described his choice as “apt and deserving”, citing his wealth of experience in rural enterprise, international partnerships and governance as vital assets for the realisation of the Commission’s mandate.

Likewise, the appointment of Mrs Omoworare was hailed by the Ooni as a strategic and impactful move. He noted her longstanding dedication to regional development and public service, expressing confidence that her inclusion would help drive a gender-inclusive approach to governance and development planning.

While congratulating both appointees, the Ooni charged them to view their new assignments not as a reward but a call to service.

“This is the time to write your names in gold. Be upright, be transparent and let the people of the South West feel the impact of good governance in their daily lives,” the monarch declared.

He also used the occasion to call on all stakeholders in the region — including traditional institutions, state governments, private sector players and civil society organisations — to rally round the Commission to ensure its success.

“This Commission must not fail. We owe it to ourselves and the coming generations to lay a solid foundation for development, unity, security and prosperity. We must work together beyond political and ethnic lines,” the Ooni asserted.

The monarch noted that the SWDC presents an opportunity to correct historical imbalances and restore the economic strength and cultural vibrancy for which the South West is renowned.

He prayed for wisdom and strength for the President and all those entrusted with this noble mission.
