The Arole Oduduwa and Olofin Adimula, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, has extended heartfelt felicitations to his childhood friend and political ally, the Okanlomo of Ibadanland, Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi, on the occasion of his birthday.

In a statement issued by the Director of Media and Public Affairs to Ooni, Otunba Moses Olafare, the revered monarch described Senator Akanbi as a dependable brother, a progressive thinker, and a true embodiment of Yoruba ideals, whose contributions to national development and community empowerment remain unmatched.

Reflecting on their shared upbringing, the Ooni recounted the deep bond forged between their families on the historic streets of Ibadan, describing it as one rooted in integrity, cultural pride, and the dream of a greater Yoruba nation.

“Even as young boys, we spoke of philanthropy, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership — things that today form the core of Senator Akanbi’s life mission,” the monarch stated.

Ooni Ogunwusi hailed Senator Akanbi’s track record in public service, recalling his days as a federal lawmaker in the House of Representatives (1992–1993), Special Adviser on Industrial and Economic Matters to the late Governor Lam Adesina (1999–2003), and as Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly (2015–2019).

He commended Senator Akanbi’s pivotal role in the facilitation of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway reconstruction and the advancement of the Lagos–Ibadan Railway project, both of which have not only improved infrastructural development but also created thousands of jobs for the teeming youth population.

“Despite not holding public office at present, Senator Akanbi remains one of Nigeria’s most active philanthropists. Through the Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi Foundation, he has continued to empower artisans, traders, retirees, youths, and students across Oyo State and beyond,” Ooni remarked.

The monarch further praised the Okanlomo of Ibadanland as a steadfast believer in the progressive ideology of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“He is a man who does not merely talk the talk, but walks the walk. His actions echo louder than political soundbites, and the results are visible in every community he has touched,” the statement read.

Ooni Ogunwusi described Senator Akanbi’s traditional title as Okanlomo of Ibadanland as a well-deserved honour, testifying to his historic, philanthropic and industrial links to the Yoruba throne and traditional institutions.

As the Permanent Chairman of the South West Traditional Council of Nigeria, the Ooni joined the good people of Ibadanland, the Government of Oyo State, political associates, business stakeholders and the entire sons and daughters of Oduduwa in celebrating Senator Akanbi.

In his words: “Igba Odun, Odun kan ni! Afon a gbo ko to wo!”
