  • Gov. Oyetola has reacted to his campaign train.

THE NATION REPORTERS reports that the Governor Gboyega Oyetola has reacted to the attack on his political campaign trail.

Recall that Oyetola’s convoy was violently attacked by armed hoodlums in Gbongan, Ayedaade Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

More than 22 members of the Osun State Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) were attacked by hoodlums who broke the windows of their vehicle and gave them a hot chase in a bid to harm them. Some journalists were injured in the process.

The incident happened around 5.30 pm on the day.

More vehicle windscreens and windows were damaged and the occupants in the affected vehicles were injured.

Armed with weapons like broken bottles, axes, machetes, iron rods, knives and other sharp objects, the thugs organised themselves into a formidable group to unleash terror on the campaign trail.

The attack lasted for about 20 minutes before the intervention of the security operatives in the convoy of the governor in Arapajo area of the town. About eight vehicles were affected.

Meanwhile, Oyetola, while reacting in a statement by the Director-General of his campaign Council, Sen. Ajibola Basiru said the attackers are PDP supporters in Gbongan.

He said: “The PDP candidate had given enough notice that he was ready for violence. But we have better things to offer the State, that is why we have been marketing our candidate in a most peaceful and responsible manner. And as we all know, our candidate, Mr Governor is a peace-loving man and will not encourage any action that can jeopardise the peace we enjoy in the State.

“They had their State and National Assembly primaries on Sunday, it was characterised by violence and attacks. We never knew they would extend same to us on Monday. We were done with our campaign. Our candidate had left the place, the rest of us were leaving when they launched the attack.

“We have it on a good authority that one Yinka Tailor of Arapajo Street, in Gbongan, a known PDP supporter led the attack on our people and the journalists in our convoy.

“We condemned this attack and urge the police authority to fish out the perpetrators, especially the alleged ring leader that has been identified.”
