Five Major Reasons Behind Obasa’s Impeachment As Lagos Speaker
Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, shared his thoughts on the recent impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa was accused of financial misappropriation by the House.
However, the Lagos political structure was in heat over the reported governorship ambition of Obasa clashing with that of the son of President Bola Tinubu, Seyi Tinubu.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Mojisola Lasbat Miranda, who represents Apapa State Constituency 1 of the Lagos State, was sworn in as Speaker.
In a post shared on X, Sani suggested that Obasa’s alleged collaboration with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s adversaries could have been a major factor.
He listed other potential reasons for the former Speaker’s removal, including his alleged impeachment plot against the governor.
Sani outlined the following reasons as contributing factors: “FIVE factors that can lead to the impeachment of a Speaker of a State Assembly; Experiences from 1999
“When there is a strong suspicion that the Speaker is plotting impeachment.
“When the Speaker is becoming too independent and resist taking orders from the Governor.
“When the speaker is not “taking good care” of members and leaving them “hungry”.
“When the Speaker is deliberately delaying or obstructing the passage of Governor’s interested Bills.
“When the speaker is strongly accused of colluding with enemies of the Governor.”
Heavy security was deployed around the State House of Assembly as the political drama unfolded, which coincided with rumours of Obasa’s potential gubernatorial ambitions for the 2027 elections.
