  • …. Issue 14-Day Ultimatum To Osun Govt, House Of Assembly

The Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter, has raised alarm over what it described as unchecked fraudulent practices by house agents across the state, warning that it will not hesitate to mobilise a massive protest if the government fails to take decisive action.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Fatomi Dare Hammed, decried the rising cases of extortion by house agents, who impose exorbitant fees and exploit innocent citizens seeking accommodation.

He lamented that despite repeated appeals to both the Osun State Government and the Osun State House of Assembly, no meaningful action had been taken to regulate the activities of these agents.

According to the statement, “The Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Fatomi Dare Hammed as Speaker, has made several appeals and requests to the Osun State Government and the Osun State House of Assembly regarding the fraudulent and exploitative activities of house agents in the state. Despite these efforts, no concrete action has been taken.

“For too long, these house agents have been operating without checks, extorting innocent citizens with exorbitant fees, unjustifiable commissions, and fraudulent practices. The housing crisis in Osun State worsens daily due to their unregulated influence, making decent housing unaffordable, especially for youths.

“We acknowledge the recent law passed concerning housing regulation; however, a law without implementation is ineffective. The people of Osun State cannot continue to suffer while those in power remain silent. Today, we are giving the Osun State Government and the Osun State House of Assembly a 14-day ultimatum, from February 3rd to February 17th, 2025, to provide an effective solution to this crisis.

“This must include the immediate implementation of the housing regulation law and the establishment of a regulatory body to monitor and control the activities of house agents. If, by February 17th, no meaningful action is taken, we, the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter, will mobilize and lead a massive protest across all constituencies in the state.

“This protest may continue indefinitely until the government takes decisive action. The suffering of the people has reached its limit. We will not remain silent. The time for action is now.”
