Over ₦96 Billion Allocated To Osun LGs In 2024 – Report

A new report has revealed that local government areas in Osun State received a total of ₦96.4 billion from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) between January and November 2024.
The findings, obtained from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), were disclosed by the Insight Initiative for Community and Social Development (IICSD) in a statement on Tuesday.
The breakdown of the allocations shows that the 30 local government areas and the Area Office in Modakeke collectively received ₦48.4 billion in the first six months of the year.
This was followed by monthly disbursements ranging from ₦8.8 billion to ₦10.5 billion between July and November.
According to IICSD, the July 11, 2024, Supreme Court judgement, which granted financial autonomy to local governments, has significantly increased allocations, with figures rising by over 200% between May 2023 and July 2024.
The group noted that since July, technocrats and civil servants have been overseeing the administration of local government areas in Osun.
However, the organisation raised concerns over the recent political violence in the state, particularly regarding the control and management of local councils.
It condemned the killings and heightened security tensions, urging politicians to act with sincerity and prioritise public interest.
“As Osun prepares for the February 22, 2025, local government election, it is imperative for citizens to scrutinise those seeking office,” the statement read.
“Whoever assumes leadership, whether through the forthcoming election or as a result of the February 10 Court of Appeal judgement, must remember that service to the people is paramount.”
IICSD also called on the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to ensure a credible and transparent election, while urging security agencies to remain professional in maintaining peace.
The group reiterated its commitment to promoting transparency and good governance through its Osun Open Local Government Project (OsunOpen LG), vowing to hold public officials accountable for the proper utilisation of funds meant for grassroots development.
“Together, we must build a stronger and more prosperous Osun,” the statement concluded.
