The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has commended the Osun State Police Command for its prompt resolution of the recent crisis involving students of Westland Polytechnic, officials of NANS, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ilobu Division.

The dispute, which occurred on 19th March 2025, reportedly stemmed from allegations of illegal arrests, harassment, and threats to the lives of students by officers of the Ilobu Police Division.

The situation sparked outrage among students, prompting NANS to file a formal petition against the police division.

However, following the intervention of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Umar Abba, and the Officer in Charge of Anti-Cultism, SP Lukman Afolabi, the matter was resolved amicably.

In a statement issued by the General Secretary of NANS Southwest, Comrade Oluwole Olutunde Aboke O’Destiny, the association expressed satisfaction with the peaceful outcome and the fruitful engagements held with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilobu.

“We appreciate the proactive steps taken by the Osun State Police Command in addressing the issues raised. The intervention of the Commissioner of Police and the harmonious discussions with the DPO have restored confidence in the relationship between students and law enforcement,” the statement read.

According to the release, the police have assured students of a safer and more secure environment within and beyond the institution, addressing the concerns raised in the initial petition.

NANS acknowledged the importance of maintaining peace while urging students to remain vigilant against any further acts inimical to their welfare.

“We call for all-round peace between Nigerian students and the police. However, we must remain watchful to ensure that no further incidents threaten our interests,” the statement added.

The association also appreciated the supportive roles played by the leadership of NANS JCC Osun, the National Association of University Students (NAUS) CMC Osun, and various students’ union leaders across the state in facilitating the peaceful resolution.

In conclusion, Comrade Oluwole reiterated NANS’ commitment to defending the interests of Nigerian students while applauding the Osun State Police Command for its responsiveness.

“We remain grateful for the swift and professional handling of this matter. Nigerian students can rest assured that we will continue to protect their rights and well-being,” he said.
