Workers’ Day: FG Sets To Announce Thursday As Public Holiday

Barring any last-minute change, the Federal Government is set to declare Thursday, May 1st, as a public holiday in commemoration of International Workers’ Day, DTRUTH INSIGHTS can authoritatively report.
A highly placed source within the Federal Ministry of Interior, who pleaded anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information, confided in our correspondent that the official statement is expected to be released later today or early tomorrow.
Traditionally, May 1st is observed across the world as a day to honour the contributions of workers to national development.
In Nigeria, it is marked with rallies, labour union parades, and government-backed events celebrating the labour force.
The public holiday affords workers across public and private sectors a moment of reflection and rest.
Although the Federal Government has yet to make a formal declaration as of press time, findings by DTRUTH INSIGHTS suggest that preparations have reached an advanced stage.
Top officials in the Ministry have reportedly concluded necessary formalities ahead of the public announcement.
It would be recalled that the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in similar fashion last year, issued the announcement less than 48 hours to the day.
Sources say the ministry is following the same pattern this year, while stakeholders, particularly members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), are already gearing up for commemorative activities nationwide.
