The Osun State Government has reacted with concern to reports that the English Language paper of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) commenced as late as 8:00pm in several secondary schools across the state on Wednesday.

Ige Oluwasegun Ebenezer, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Civil Society Engagement, expressed dismay over the development, describing it as “totally unacceptable”.

In a statement posted on his official social media page, Ebenezer confirmed that the English paper, which was scheduled for the afternoon, did not begin in most public schools until nightfall—an occurrence he said demands immediate explanation.

“Report coming in from several secondary schools in Osun is that WAEC started English exam papers for most of these schools by 8pm tonight. This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE,” Ebenezer said.

The SSA added that the state government has taken note of the public outcry trailing the incident and would engage with relevant authorities to get to the root of the delay.

Wednesday night saw widespread outrage from parents, education stakeholders and concerned citizens across Osun State, particularly in Ile-Ife and Osogbo, where students were reportedly writing the crucial paper well into the night.

Many lamented the lack of basic provisions such as lighting, as some students were allegedly told to bring candles to enable them write the paper.
