Tragedy struck in the early hours of Wednesday in Gbongan, Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State, as a trailer conveying Sallah rams and cows to Ikire crashed, leaving two persons dead.

The incident, which occurred at the Oke Ofa area of the town, involved a trailer said to be transporting livestock from Kebbi State ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

Eyewitnesses said that the trailer lost control and veered into a canal by the roadside, killing the driver and one other passenger on the spot.

“The driver may have dozed off behind the wheel,” one of the residents, who preferred anonymity, said. “The trailer somersaulted and ended up in the bush. The impact was severe. We saw rams and cows dead at the scene. It was a terrible sight.”

Commander Olanrewaju Ismail of the Amotekun Corps in Ayedaade Local Government confirmed the accident, adding that rescue efforts involved local security operatives and residents.

He disclosed that the vehicle was carrying 18 individuals, with two confirmed dead.

“We were alerted shortly after the crash and mobilised to the scene. They were coming from Kebbi with livestock meant for sale in Ikire. Unfortunately, the driver and one passenger died instantly, while others sustained injuries,” Ismail said.
