In what appears to be a strategic boost for the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the registration of two new political parties namely Independent Democrats (ID) and the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).

The development, which many observers interpret as a subtle victory for anti-Tinubu forces positioning for the next electoral cycle, was made public via a notice issued by the Commission on Tuesday.

The notice, signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs. A. C. Ogakwu, and sighted by DTRUTH INSIGHTS, confirmed that the newly registered parties met the constitutional and legal requirements stipulated in the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

According to INEC, the registration process included scrutiny and approval of each party’s Constitution, Manifesto, Logo/Flag, and list of National Executive Officers. With the entrance of ID and PDM into the political arena, analysts believe the opposition may be consolidating efforts to widen its base and build a coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu’s ruling party come 2027.

Though the new parties are yet to formally announce their political alignments, sources within opposition circles suggest that consultations are ongoing to explore merger possibilities and form a unified front under a broader coalition to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political stakeholders in the South-West and North-Central have already begun to hold closed-door meetings aimed at harmonising strategies ahead of the polls.

The registration of the two parties, while constitutional, is already being interpreted as a tactical win for the opposition bloc seeking to capitalise on growing discontent and economic hardship under the current administration.

As the race to 2027 gains momentum, the political atmosphere appears set for a fierce contest.
