Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have applauded the Students’ Union leadership following what has been described as the largest welfare intervention in the institution’s history.

The Welfare Officer of the Great Ife Students’ Union, Osunleke Musab, spearheaded a large-scale feeding initiative that provided free cooked meals to over 4,000 students and distributed more than 3,000 essential food items across the campus.

The intervention, which coincided with the ongoing examination period and the Ramadan fasting season, was designed to cushion the financial and physical strain faced by students amid prevailing economic challenges.

Beneficiaries received freshly prepared meals for immediate consumption, alongside staple food supplies to support them throughout the examination and fasting period.

Speaking on the development, the Students Union PRO, Olowosile Oreoluwa described the exercise as unprecedented in the history of the university.

“This marks the largest welfare intervention ever recorded on the OAU campus,” the PRO stated, noting that the scale, organization, and transparency of the distribution reflected a strong commitment to student wellbeing.

In his remarks, Welfare Officer Osunleke Musab explained that the initiative was motivated by the economic realities affecting students nationwide.

“Our goal was simple, no student should have to write exams or observe fasting on an empty stomach. This is about compassion, responsibility, and leadership in action. And this is only the beginning; more welfare initiatives are underway,” he said.

The distribution exercise attracted widespread participation across faculties, with many students describing it as timely, impactful, and a clear demonstration of responsive leadership.

Some beneficiaries commended the Students’ Union for prioritizing welfare at a critical academic period, noting that the intervention not only eased hunger but also boosted morale during examinations.
