Suspected Robbers Invade University, ‘Rape’ Female Students
There is currently tension at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt after hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers invaded the school.
Reports obtained revealed that the assailants raided female hostels on Thursday morning, carting away mobile phones, cash and other valuables.
One of the students who spoke with The PUNCH asserted that four female students were injured during the attack while some girls were sexually assaulted and raped them when the assailants invaded hostel ‘D’ and ‘C’ near the school back gate, where many of the female students are accommodated.
The raid reportedly happened at about 1:45 a.m. today.
“About four female students were injured. They (hoodlums) were armed with guns and machetes.
“They operated for about 45 minutes, collected phones, cash and other valuable items belonging to the girls (students),” the student told journalists.
Students have since trooped out in their numbers for a protest as they lament the incident, which they termed poor security.
It was reported that the management of the institution had also shut the two entrances of the school to prevent the riotous situation from escalating.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident to newsmen but said no student was raped.
“I am aware of the incident, and the investigation is ongoing. As we speak, the Divisional Police Officer mobilized his team to the school, and he met with the School Chief Security Officer, and normalcy has been restored,” the PUNCH quoted the police mouthpiece saying.
Reacting to the reports of rape, Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, said, “It is not true. They only stole their phones.”
