The proposed creation of 31 additional states in Nigeria has sparked fresh debate over the nation’s political structure, with Osun State set to be directly affected by the move.

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, in a proposal presented during Thursday’s plenary, outlined plans that could alter the territorial composition of Osun and its neighbouring states.

Among the suggested new states is Oke Ogun/Ijesha, which is expected to be carved out from parts of Osun, Oyo, and Ogun States.

This development has raised concerns among stakeholders who fear potential disruptions to Osun’s administrative and economic landscape.

The proposal also includes other new states across all geopolitical zones, increasing Nigeria’s total number of states to 67 if approved.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, emphasised that the proposal follows due constitutional guidelines, requiring a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly and approval from affected state legislatures.

While proponents argue that new states will promote development and representation, critics warn of administrative complications and financial strain on the country.
