The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially withdrawn from the February 22, 2025, local government elections, citing a recent Appeal Court ruling that reinstated its previously elected council officials.

In a letter addressed to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) and signed by the State Party Secretary, Alao Olabisi Kamoru, the APC stated that the Federal High Court ruling, which initially sacked its elected local government chairmen and councillors, was nullified by the Appeal Court sitting in Akure on February 10, 2025.

The party argued that, with the reinstatement of its elected officials, the council seats were no longer vacant, making the scheduled election unnecessary and unlawful.

The APC further described the local government poll as “superfluous” and accused the state government of attempting to manipulate the electoral process despite the court judgment.

OSUN DEFENDER recalls that there had been crisis between APC and PDP over the Court of Appeal judgment in respect of the sacked APC council chairmen and councillors.

While the PDP claimed that the Feb. 10 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Akure, did not reinstate the sacked APC chairmen and councillors elected in 2022, APC insisted on their return local government secretariats.

Crisis, however, erupted on Monday when both parties were laying claim to local government secretariats across the state.

Police confirmed that six persons lost their lives and scores injured during crisis.
