Panic gripped residents around the Testing Ground area of Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday after a man plunged into the overflown river along the East Bypass.

The yet-to-be-identified man, suspected to be mentally unstable, had reportedly wandered around the vicinity for days before taking the dive into the river shortly before noon.

An eyewitness and shop owner near the scene, Dorcas Taiwo, disclosed that she had noticed the man loitering since Saturday.

“He was behaving strangely. I shouted when I saw him heading toward the bridge. Luckily, some passers-by responded quickly and jumped in after him,” she said.

The man, who was found without clothes, was rescued alive by volunteers before the arrival of officials from the Osun State and Federal Fire Services.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, Adekunle Ibrahim, said it was a joint response with the federal team.

“He had already been pulled out of the river before we arrived. He was left in the care of people in the community,” Ibrahim stated.

The rescued man was later laid by the roadside, with residents providing temporary assistance pending further intervention.
