The Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was thrown into deep mourning on Friday following the death of Prince Musbau Ashafa, the Executive Chairman of Otto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Ashafa, a longstanding political loyalist and grassroots organiser, died after battling an undisclosed illness for several months.

Ashafa, fondly referred to as one of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s “political sons,” was not just a regular figure within Lagos politics—he was a product of the political machinery nurtured by the former Lagos governor and now President of Nigeria.

His journey in politics mirrored that of many Lagos progressives who rose through the ranks under Tinubu’s tutelage, loyalty, and political structure.

Before emerging as the council chairman, Ashafa had served as the Chairman of the APC in Otto-Awori LCDA, a position that firmly aligned him with Tinubu’s political camp.

His grassroots influence, strategic positioning within the Ojo axis, and consistency in party loyalty earned him the respect of key stakeholders within the APC, especially in Lagos.

Prince Ashafa’s political career began in 1997 during the military regime of General Sani Abacha, when he was elected Chairman of the old Ojo Local Government under the zero-party arrangement. Since then, he remained a prominent figure in local politics, particularly in Ojo, Ijanikin, and the broader Lagos West zone.

Ashafa was serving his second term as the chairman of Otto-Awori LCDA until his death. In recent months, his absence from public events and official functions had been noticeable, with most of his responsibilities delegated to his Chief of Staff and younger brother, Waliu Ashafa.

His demise represents not just the loss of a council chairman, but the departure of a loyal political son of the Tinubu dynasty—one whose contributions to the APC at the local level were both strategic and deeply rooted.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon by his family.
