JUST IN: Rivers Assembly Gives Fresh Update On Fubara’s Impeachment Amidst Tinubu’s Intervention
The Rivers State House of Assembly has insisted that the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, remains ongoing, despite reported intervention by President Bola Tinubu in the political crisis rocking the state.
The Assembly made the clarification in a press statement issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Enemi George.
It dismissed reports suggesting that the impeachment proceedings had been halted, describing them as misleading and deliberately crafted to misinform the public.
According to the lawmakers, the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is being carried out strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“The Rivers State House of Assembly is pleased to inform the good people of Rivers State that the impeachment process commenced by the House on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is fully on course in line with relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.
The Assembly disclosed that two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct had been issued against the governor and the deputy governor in line with Section 188 of the Constitution and duly forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, while awaiting their responses.
It further maintained that the House was constitutionally empowered to act in defence of the rule of law and prevent infractions by any public office holder in the state, stressing that lawmakers were duty-bound to discharge their responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
Reacting to reports that the impeachment had been suspended, the Assembly accused some individuals and media platforms of peddling false narratives aimed at causing disaffection between the legislature and the public.
“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are at it again to misinform the public, particularly to the effect that the process has been halted or discontinued. With the leave of the Speaker, I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed,” the statement added.
The clarification comes amid indications that President Bola Tinubu has stepped into the prolonged feud between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
A highly placed source disclosed that the President had summoned Wike to a meeting abroad over the Rivers crisis, while Governor Fubara was also said to have travelled out of the country to meet with the President.
The fresh impeachment move against Fubara and his deputy is being spearheaded by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly reportedly loyal to Wike.
During plenary on Thursday, presided over by Speaker Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read the notice of allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.
The seven allegations against Fubara include the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding of funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on the financial autonomy of the legislature. Prof. Odu was also accused of reckless and unconstitutional spending, obstructing the Assembly’s constitutional duties, and conniving to allow unauthorised occupation of offices without legislative approval.
Speaker Amaewhule described the impeachment notice as being in the interest of Rivers State, accusing the governor of failing to present the 2026 budget to the House, thereby undermining the powers of the legislature.
He adjourned plenary to January 15, noting that the notices would be formally served on the affected officials.
The current crisis follows the collapse of an earlier truce brokered by President Tinubu in 2025 after a previous confrontation between Fubara and Wike, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the six-month suspension of the governor.
While Tinubu’s intervention is expected to calm tensions, the Rivers Assembly has insisted that it remains committed to its constitutional duties and will not be deterred by political pressure, blackmail, or threats as the impeachment process continues.
