The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade has addressed the public debate that followed his interaction with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, during the 2026 Inter-Faith Service held at the Secretariat’s Grand Space, Ibadan.

The clarification was contained in a feature article on Tuesday authored by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Mr. Bode Durojaiye, in which the monarch was described as an embodiment of humility, guided by values deeply rooted in religion, tradition, and human relations.

A viral video from the event had shown the Alaafin seated while extending a hand of greeting to the Olubadan, a gesture that was not reciprocated, sparking mixed reactions and interpretations across social media and public spaces.

According to the statement, the Alaafin’s conduct should not be viewed through the lens of arrogance or disrespect, but rather as a reflection of his deeply held belief in humility as the highest virtue of leadership.

The palace noted that humility, often misunderstood in contemporary society, is not weakness but a quiet strength that promotes understanding, unity, and mutual respect.

The statement explained that the Alaafin’s philosophy of leadership is anchored on recognising shared humanity, valuing others regardless of status, and prioritising peace over personal validation. It stressed that true humility involves openness, deep listening, and the willingness to learn, rather than performative gestures aimed at public approval.

“All religions emphasise humility in behaviour and belief,” the statement noted, adding that kindness and compassion, though sometimes mistaken for weakness, represent the strongest expressions of leadership and moral authority.
